Yes, Brookline is asking voters to hike up property taxes - again - this time by an astounding $23.25 million. That's after a $12 million hike in 2023. We also had tax overrides in 2008, 2015 and 2018, and they’re getting bigger. Over the last ten years, our property taxes went up by 93%. This new increase, if passed, will have increased our taxes by 130% by 2029. By the way, this is not a one-off to see us through hard times. This is permanent and resets the base for future hikes. Is this avoidable? Yes. The town convened a study committee to figure out what to do. The committee (ERSC) found that critical parts of the Town's budgets are unsustainable. They made specific recommendations, many of which have been ignored. We need a reset. We need a plan to balance our budget. If this one is passed, we'll see another one in 2029.
